Bio:

Denyse Anyogu, aka Single Black Female is a singer/songwriter and poet. Her roots are in Ghana and Nigeria. Denyse is very much a product of a blend of different creative flows. She has a mind to search out and strive for fresh meaning and paths untrodden. This search has inspired her to read, question, write, and pray, and the focus throughout this trip has come through music. For her, thoughts and feelings come most naturally through song. In her own words “the way I feel when a song has been birthed cannot be expressed, and although I find the business of music quite challenging, my love of this art remains steadfast!. This is the reason why my musical journey will hold me to the very end!”

Now don’t get it twisted, the name ‘Single Black Female’ has nothing to do with any marital status, or lack of it! Quite simply it’s the simple essence of the physical person. The name is a pure expression of what you see – one woman’s physical elements which are unchanging. As she puts it “I sincerely believe that people should be valued for who they are within - each of us has a well that runs very deep. Let’s aim to celebrate that unique spirit within us all!”

Denyse began writing professionally with internationally renowned composer Nitin Sawhney, meeting him at the Theatre Royal in Stratford East several years ago. She later appeared on his albums Spirit Dance and Displacing The Priest, singing and co-writing on the track In the Mind. Her television appearances include CDUK and Mad about Music - a BBC documentary about fusion, on which she performed a song called Hear The Voice. She has also toured with her eponymous full length debut album Single Black Female. Through Nitin’s introduction Denyse met and has since collaborated extensively with Niraj Chag featuring on the title Track on the album ‘Along the Dusty Road’.

Denyse’s musical path has led her to work with many talented and wonderful people. The collaberations that have grown from these meetings of like-minded spirits are nothing if not priceless. These gifted people include Dean Barrett, Global Grooves, Tha Tha Ensemble, and Andy Black. Denyse is currently witing a musical.
